Dubai Grand Racing 2008

Dubai Autodrome hosted the first round of the inaugural Grand Racing series in January. The event was hailed as a success by fans, teams and organisers. In April the event returns to the circuit for another two days of action packed entertainment.

On 25 & 26 January 20,000 people attended proceedings over the three days with the majority turning up on Friday and Saturday.

Dubai Autodrome Chairman Saeed Khalfan was pleased and encouraged by the turn out, “The Grand Racing concept was a crowd pleaser. The Main Grandstand was almost full each day with the Village area swarming with race fans while the pit and paddock area was a constant hive of activity. There was a big event atmosphere throughout the weekend. Racing was exceptional with hard fought battles in the support races, the spectacular Speedcar races which had the crowd on their feet and of course the GP2 Asia series with the future stars of Formula One entertaining us here in Dubai. I would like to thank all the fans, competitors, team personnel, international and national organisations who came out and supported the event and I hope they had a good time and will return again in April to the finale of the Grand Racing season at our circuit.”

Spectators were thrilled by fast and furious race action of which highlights were the inaugural GP2 Asia races dominated by young Frenchman, Romain Grosjean, who announced his arrival on the big stage GP2 Asia grid at Grand Racingwith two immaculate which saw him standing at the top of the podium on both Friday and Saturday having conquered the opposition in Dubai. Undoubtedly a name to watch for the future he beat some of the most promising young talents in the sport including the likes of Bruno Senna, Karun Chandhok, Luca Filippi, Sebastian Buemi and Andy Soucek to name a few.

Formula One veteran Gianni Morbidelli achieved similar results by winning both the Speedcar Series races albeit in totally different fashion. Sure enough he dominated the first race on Friday but the next day he had to call on his vast experience and race craft to survive the mayhem of race two. In the end he was rewarded by yet another victory in a series that is fast becoming a must see for fans of big horsepower, brute stockcar style racing.

Scraped paintwork, dents and “bruises” on the cars after the final race of Lumina CSV Middle East Championship was an indication of the on-track action. Fahad Al Musalam and Raed Raffi went home with the winners laurels. The Gulf Radical Cup represented UAE national racing on the weekend and it was Maurits Knopjes who won race one and Sheikh Slaman Al Khalifa bagging race two.

Dubai race fans can look forward to the finale of Grand Racing on 11 and 12 April 2008 when the show returns again to the Dubai Autodrome.

The World Island Paradise in Dubai

One way to add land mass to a city is to add a series of world-class islands to that city’s coastline. Dubai developer, Nakheel, has added more than 1,500 km of beach front to the Dubai coastline with various island-building projects over the past decade. These islands include The Palm, The World and Dubai Waterfront, and they’re located off the Dubai city coastline, United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the eastern Arabian Peninsula.

The World is the latest complete island paradise, with the last stone on the breakwater added on 10 January this year. Investors and developers can choose among 300 islands in the shape of the continents to create estate islands and residential and resort communities. All 300 islands are accessible only by marine or air transport, with world-class marinas to berth boats, yachts and cruise liners. Two mainland marinas will service The World, and 4 hub islands in The World will service the islands.

Nakheel integrates a series of waterways, canals and lakes to enhance the overall design. Investors have the freedom to create their own personal vision on the islands for private or commercial use, whether it is for leisure, residential or tourist developments. The 300 islands will be offered for sale on a freehold basis to selected investors only. If The World doesn’t suit your taste, perhaps the next Nakheel project, The Universe, will be more your cup of tea.

Dubai Nightlife

The nightlife in Dubai is active, growing and noisy. Get up late so you can enjoy all the night fun this city has to offer.

First, be aware that while the climate here is hot, many clubs don’t allow flip flops or baseball caps and the like. Like clubs in just about any major city, the bouncer will decide who gets in and they often do stop people at the door in “inappropriate” attire, even if it seemed appropriate outside in the 100-degree weather.

Once you do venture out to take in the club scene, here are some things to note.

Stay away from the clubs on Mondays. Most of them are not active and some closed altogether.

Clubs in Dubai close at 3 a.m. and you must be 25 to get into one, and 21 to drink in Dubai. Many clubs aren’t allowed to serve alcohol, but you can often get alcohol in hotel bars and many of the clubs. If being able to drink is important to you, be sure to clarify if your chosen club serves alcoholic drinks.

You should be able to get into just about any club, even members-only clubs. They aren’t allowed to refuse admittance to anyone, but they will charge an entrance fee and it can be hefty which might deter you from trying to get in, and they may claim its 'reservations only.'

Anything in Dubai that goes against the Muslim religion is subject to a 30% tax, and this includes drinking, so locals and experts warn that the drinks can get expensive in Dubai.

The night clubs of Dubai are ethnicity focused as well. There are Arabian Club, American Club, European Club, Philipino Club and Indian Club. All these night clubs present dancers from there own ethnicity. Foods are also reflective of their respective cultures.

Dubai International Horse Fair

The Dubai International Horse Fair (DIHF) 2008 will be held from 20 – 22 March at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, Hall 4, 5 & 6.

With a growth in net exhibition space of over 250% since its inauguration three years ago, DIHF has established itself as the region's largest exhibition for equestrian equipment, services and care products.

Over the years, the exhibition has introduced several new features and has evolved into the essential platform for everybody in the equestrian related business, such as distributors, veterinarians, riders, horse owners and breeders, grooms, etc.

This development is in line with the huge growth of the Equestrian Market in the Middle East. New equestrian projects are being developed, driven by the rapid 5% annual growth in population and further propelled by the region's heritage as a culture of horse-lovers.

DIHF is under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Minister of Finance and Industry, and Chairman of the Dubai World Trade Centre. The exhibition will once again be complimented by the Dubai International Arabian Horse Championship (DIAHC), a competition for pure-bred Arabian Horses.
