Jumeirah Emirates Towers

Jumeirah Beach named best hotel

Dubai: For the third year in a row, readers of one of Germany's leading business travel magazines, Business Traveller, have chosen Jumeirah Beach Hotel as the 'Best Hotel in the Middle East.

Jumeirah hotels are a clear favourite of German business travellers visiting the Middle East, with previous editions of the award being presented to Burj Al Arab (2004) and Jumeirah Emirates Towers (2003, 2002), said an official spokesman.

The continuous success of its various hotels in the Gulf region is also raising the awareness of the Jumeirah Group amongst German business travellers who, for the first time, have voted Jumeirah Group as the 'Best Middle Eastern Hotel Chain'.

The two Business Traveller/Germany awards were handed out during a ceremony held in Frankfurt (Germany).

Jumeirah was also voted Best Hotel Chain in the Middle East for the second consecutive year by the American magazine Global Traveler (GT).

Incidentally, the GT Tested Awards ceremony was held in another Jumeirah property - Jumeirah Essex House in New York City.

GT is a highly regarded American business travel publication focusing on the interests of today's executive travellers. Over 15 000 readers of the magazine have participated in this year's edition of the GT Tested Awards survey, handpicking the best in business and luxury travel.

"It is a great honour to receive these awards from our American and German guests," said Jumeirah Group executive chairman Gerald Lawless.

"Business travellers and travel industry professionals are increasingly aware of the distinctiveness of Jumeirah hotels, not only in the Middle East but also in other major international business centres, such as London where we operate the Jumeirah Carlton Tower and Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel, Jumeirah Essex House in New York, or Jumeirah Han Tang Xintiandi, which will soon open in Shanghai," he added.

Burj Dubai's 94th floor bought for Dh44 million

15 February 2008

DUBAI — A European investor has bought for Dh44 million the world's highest office-level measuring 11,000 sq ft on the 94th floor of Burj Dubai, now the highest building on earth at 604.9 metres.

The sale was facilitated by Dubai-based Eqarat.com, the preferred sales agent for all the real-estate projects of Emaar Properties, developer of the 159-floor Burj Dubai, the agent said in a statement yesterday.

Eqarat.com did not reveal the investor, but described the deal as a "successful acquisition of the most coveted commercial real-estate property within the globally renowned landmark".

The statement said that intense competition among property developers and high-profile investors has made it difficult for buyers to acquire their ideal properties in Dubai, which is seeing tremendous growth in the construction industry.

"It brings us pride to have successfully facilitated the sale of the most sought-after commercial space in Dubai at present, as a result of our market strategy, which we have gained through extensive knowledge of the local market," said Ali Al Rahma, CEO of Eqarat.com.
Burj Dubai is the centrepiece project in Emaar's 500-acre Downtown Burj Dubai development, which includes residences, hotels, retail spaces and community centres, among other things.

Arabic Food - Cuisine of Dubai and UAE

Arabic food - is there a special Dubai version? The answer, perhaps unfortunately for foodies who head to Dubai in the hope of sampling the local cuisine, is no. Dubai is far more a melting pot of different cultures (and their recipes) than a place to try traditional cuisine. The Arabic food available in Dubai tends to be borrowed from other parts of the Middle East, particularly Lebanon and Iran.

When you're in Dubai, it's best to enjoy the wide choice of cuisines available, and the fact that so much of it is excellent value. You won't take long to find a reasonably-priced Indian restaurant, for example, and the food they serve will resemble the real subcontinent's cuisine more closely than anything you'll find at home.

But, really, whatever your favourite region is, you'll find food from there. If you're on a budget, Indian, Pakistani and Filipino restaurants are probably your best bet, but if you're prepared to pay more, you can find food from almost anywhere in the world. There are French, Japanese and Thai places, as well as steakhouses to satisfy the most dedicated meat-eater. Or enjoy a plate of pasta in one of the many Italian eateries.

But if you've come to the Middle East for the Arabic food, you will probably want to try one of the Lebanese, Iranian or Moroccan restaurants. The principle behind this kind of food is mezze (also known as mezza, meza and other similar words), which is very different from the traditional three-course meal. With mezze, plenty of appetisers and appetiser-sized courses are all placed on the table at the same time. There are usually plenty of flatbreads and plenty of olives. This leads to a more leisurely, less structured way of eating the meal.
But why isn't there a traditional Dubai take on Arabic food?

Dubai is such a modern, multicultural, technologically advanced place that it is easy to forget how it used to be. The area was inhabited by nomadic Bedouin tribes with a very limited diet by modern standards. They ate little beyond camel meat, camel milk, fish and dates. Even given that there are many different varieties of dates in the region, this doesn't form the basis of an exciting cuisine.

However, the Bedouins have made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for creating the largest item on any menu. This mammoth item is stuffed camel. Chickens are stuffed with rice and hard-boiled eggs, then a lamb is stuffed with the chickens. The skinned, cleaned camel is then stuffed with the lamb, broiled over a charcoal pit and decorated with nuts. Legend has it that this dish (serving 80-100 people) was served at Bedouin wedding feasts. However, nobody is quite sure of the veracity of this story, despite its entrance into the record books.

However, it may have been the inspiration for the turducken, a chicken stuffed into a duck stuffed into a turkey, or even for the song about the old lady who swallowed a fly.

It will come as a relief to dieters that you won't be served this monstrous dish in modern-day Dubai, but if you're lucky enough to be a guest at a Dubai family home, you are likely to come away feeling as stuffed as a camel.

Dubai Shopping Festival

The coming edition of DSF will be unique in its own way when it welcomes visitors to a new season – ''The Fifth Season''. So while the rest of the world will witness four seasons in a year, visitors to Dubai can bask in a fifth season that will be the best among them all. Complete with the finest possible entertainment and shopping opportunities, DSF visitors will be treated to a period of non-stop festivities for 32 days from January 24 to February 24, 2008.

About Dubai Shopping Festival- DSF

On February 15, 1996, the travel industry in the Middle East heralded the beginning of a new dawn - the birth of the most impressive shopping cum entertainment mega event. An entirely new concept, it succeeded brilliantly in showcasing what co-operation between private sector and public sector could do to create a mind-boggling achievement.
Along the lines of the stature that Dubai has achieved with its clarity of vision, innovation, initiative and drive, the Festival was shaped under the committed leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.
As months of preparations went into creating Dubai Shopping Festival, the shopping festival matured into a major retailing cum entertainment extravaganza. The rest is history. Today, one of the biggest beneficiaries of the event is the tourism sector. Hotels, travel agents and tour operators contribute to the selling of the event worldwide and it would be fair to assume, run at the peak levels of operation during the event.

Every year, Dubai Shopping Festival lives up to its promise of staging the most exciting activities for the whole family inspired by the theme One World, One Family, One Festival. As universal brotherhood, happiness, excitement, joy and adventure became the signature trademarks of Dubai Shopping Festival, the Festival itself became a tribute to the inherent ambition and strength of the people of the United Arab Emirates. Local and multinational brands acknowledged their faith in the event, and brands like Visa, Pepsi and Emirates Airlines became partners to DSF's growth. The experience gained over the years during DSF will be of immense benefit during the 10th DSF, which is scheduled to be organised from January 12, 2005 to February 12, 2005 under the same theme - One World, One Family, One Festival. The next DSF will witness fresh creative inputs and innovative promotions that will go a long way in attracting more visitors to the Emirate.
